Farmers' Cross

A project to create a lasting memorial
to local farms that shaped our community

The plan is erect the Cross on the
Village Green at Castor.

Introduction from Brian Goode

"In my youth there were about ten farms in Castor, and four or five in Ailsworth. There were, between them, several in Sutton, Upton and Marholm. Now we have but a few working farms between us. It is true that all the farmhouses are still there, while a few of their barns have been converted into dwellings.. However, the farms which were the largest employers of local men, and indeed a number of women, are now a thing of the past and a mere memory. That memory will fade even further as another generation bids farewell to this world.

What can we do to perpetuate an important part of our local history? It has been decided to seek planning permission to erect a Farmers' Cross on Castor Green, a cross standing on a plinth, to be made of Clipsham sand stone. On the plinth we envisage a plaque with the names of all the Farms which have been and are in our five villages.

We will be holding various functions to raise money for this project."
